is the military telling you? >> reporter: well, a defense official i just spoke with a few minutes ago said this is clearly an act of terrorism and that was echoedamplified by leon panetta, he's meeting with nato allies. and he said clearly this was a terrorist act, this kidnapping including some american hostages. right now, from sources that we are speaking with, africa command is taking the lead on this from the military side. but they are mostly conferring with the state department and the fbi as the state department sifts through the information and works with the algerians to get the best available information on what is going on the ground. there are some military assets that are somewhat close. there are marine, fleet anti-terrorism teams in italy. there is also air force surveillance aircraft that could be available out of aviano, also in italy. there are some military assets in the area. but the defense official i spoke with said right now the best thing is to get all the information they can about what is going on, on the ground. in other words, he said how many bad guys are ther

in the way in two ways. if you're a company that does business with the defense department, if you're watching this sequestration madness. our the debt ceiling madness, are you going to be hiring new people? are you going to be expanding production? no, you're going to be wondering, is the defense department budget cut by 20%, 10%? so there is that -- >> you will hesitate to make certain business decisions, particularly hiring decisions? >> exactly. republicans often talk about how uncertainty makes businesses not expand production. well this is the biggest uncertainty is the craziness over the debt ceiling. and the second biggest is on the sequestration. there's that piece of it. but there's the broader piece that you and i have talked about. which is we need to do more than just have a cyclical upturn. what you were describing very elegantly. exactly right, is that there's a cyclical rise, return of the american economy. housing is up, energy production is up. but there's a broader issue, which is how do we get the kind of growth we used to have in this country. three, 4% growth.

's interesting that a lot of times, you have people who recognize that when it comes to defense spending. some of the same folks who say we've got to cut spending or complain that government jobs don't do anything, when it comes to that defense contractor in their district, they think, wow, this is a pretty important part of the economy in my district. we shouldn't stop spending on that. let's just make sure that we're not spending on those other folks. [ inaudible question ] >> look, my hope is that common sense prevails. that's always my preference. and i think that would be the preference of the american people and that's what would be good for the economy. so let me just repeat. if the issue is deficit reduction, getting our deficits sustainable over time, getting our debt in a sustainable place, then democrats and republicans in congress will have a partner with me. we can achieve that and we can achieve it fairly quickly. we know what the numbers are, we know what needs to be done. we know what a balanced approach would take, and we've already done probably more than half of the deficit

. today that request was accepted and now i'm told by defense officials that military planners are in deep discussion with the french to go over specifically what they are going to bring in and where they are going to bring it. one defense official that i spoke with said that it could be the equivalent of the entire mek mek cannized battalion and might take up to 30 flights to get all of that in there for the french. in the end rkt the french would reinvert the u.s. for the cost of those cargo flights. there was a separate request for some u.s. surveillance as well as refueling and u.s. planes could pull up to the french jets, refuel them in the air, that's another request that's still under consideration but that part has not been decided, wolf. >> that's stepping up the military role in mali. that's a significant is headline. let me bring tom fuentes back in. are you surprised that france is helping deal with this crisis in mali? >> i'm not surprised to not let the al qaeda affiliates in mali and other countries become more powerful, to gain a foothold in

the military help come from? >> it could come from europe and even closer. a senior defense official tells me now that defense secretary leon panetta has assured americans that the u.s. military will take all necessary and proper steps to deal with this attack. what could that mean? most importantly, the pentagon's africa command has what is called a commander and extremist force. it's a small, very lethal force that is dedicated to hostage rescue and counterterrorism. they are at an undisclosed location but we're told they are on a very, very short window to be put into action. now, expanding out just a little bit, take a look at the map, look at where algeria is. look at where this oil facility is. you can take a look in italy, the u.s. has air bases in italy which they could use a cargo lift, they could also use surveillance plates from there and they also have about 150 marines that are trained in crisis intervention in italy and also as we move over to rota, spain, there are two marine corps anti-terrorism bases there. further out, if necessary, back here on the east coast, all u.s. spec
